Summary

The following equations demonstrate the relationship between the different elastic constants, where:

  • E = Young’s Modulus, also known as Modulus of Elasticity
  • G = Shear Modulus, also known as Modulus of Rigidity
  • K = Bulk Modulus
  • v = Poisson’s Ratio

 

Calculate Shear Modulus from Young’s Modulus

(1)   \begin{align*}G=\frac{E}{2(1+v)}\end{align*}

Calculate Shear Modulus from the Bulk Modulus

(2)   \begin{align*}G=\frac{3K(1-2v)}{2(1+v)}\end{align*}

Calculate Bulk Modulus from Young’s Modulus

(3)   \begin{align*}K=\frac{E}{3(1-2v)}\end{align*}

Calculate Bulk Modulus from the Shear Modulus

(4)   \begin{align*}K=\frac{2G(1+v)}{3(1-2v)}\end{align*}
